Cologix, a retail colocation provider focused on the enterprise data center segment, which is backed by Stonepeak Infrastructure, today reiterated its plans to build three hyperscale data centers, newly dubbed as Scalelogix, which together will comprise over 200 megawatts of power capacity and 1 million sqft in the markets of Ashburn, Virginia; Columbus, Ohio; and Silicon Valley, California. While the data centers were not explicitly named, Cologix’s projects likely include developments at the following sites:
- Ashburn, Virginia: phase 1 and 2 of its ASH1 data center located at 21673 Beaumeade Circle
- Columbus, Ohio: 40-megawatt hyperscale edge facility called COL4, which was announced in March 2021
- Silicon Valley, California: build-out of a further ~11 megawatts of power capacity at its newly acquired data center campus in Santa Clara
Presently, Cologix operates three, multi-tenant hyperscale ‘Scalelogix’ data centers in the markets of Columbus, Ohio and Montreal, Canada. In aggregate, these facilities, which are COL3, MTL9, and MTL10, comprise 70 megawatts of power capacity and 440k sqft. Therefore, Cologix’s total Scalelogix portfolio encompasses 6 current and planned hyperscale data centers comprising 1.4 million sqft and 270 megawatts of power capacity.
Hyperscale ‘Scalelogix’ Data Center Expansion – Cologix
Following Cologix’s recent equity recapitalization and $1.1bn debt securitization, the company has the funding in-place to continue building-out its three new hyperscale data centers. Below are further details on Cologix’s ongoing development projects in Ashburn, Virginia; Columbus, Ohio; and Silicon Valley, California:
ASH1 – Ashburn, Virginia
Cologix’s 22.6-acre ASH1 site is located at 21673 Beaumeade Circle in Ashburn, Virginia. Specifically, the site is on the west side of Beaumeade Circle, ~500 feet south of the intersection with Guilford Drive.
In July 2018, Cologix purchased the ASH1 site for $38m, equivalent to $1.7m per acre. Subsequently, the company began construction of the ASH1 data center campus in December 2020.
Ultimately, Cologix’s ASH1 data center campus will consist of two, three-story buildings, which will comprise 120 megawatts of power capacity across 1 million sqft. However, initially, only the southern building (known as Phase 1 and 2) is under construction, which will span ~540k sqft.
COL4 – Columbus, Ohio
Cologix’s COL4 site is located at the corner of Alta View Boulevard and Worthington Wood Boulevard in Columbus, Ohio. At full build-out, the 40-megawatt COL4 facility will comprise 250k+ sqft of total area, including ~117k sqft of raised floor space, across six data center halls.
SV1 – Silicon Valley, California
Cologix’s 5-acre SV1 site is located at 2050 Martin Avenue in Santa Clara, California. Presently, Cologix’s SV1 data center comprises 9 megawatts of power capacity across 84k sqft.
Additionally, the SV1 campus can grow to 218k sqft of data center space, adding a further ~11 megawatts of power capacity, to reach 20 megawatts of power capacity at full build-out.
Cologix is building-out hyperscale ‘Scalelogix’ data center capacity to serve demand from cloud service providers and large enterprises. To this end, the company is enabling the growth in applications that need to be located at the edge of fixed, 5G, and public cloud networks.
Data Center Architecture
Cologix identifies its niche as serving latency-sensitive applications of hyperscale customers with its Scalelogix data centers. In order to fulfill this proposition, the company places itself in close proximity to meet-me rooms, while simultaneously being near to customers at the edge. For example, in Columbus, Cologix serves large capacity deployments out of its 14-megawatt COL3 facility which is adjacent to its own meet-me rooms at COL1 and COL2.
Additionally, Cologix’s Scalelogix data centers interconnect with the company’s colocation facilities. This provides customers with access to Cologix’s ecosystem of 600+ networks and 29 cloud on-ramps across the United States and Canada.
